Back From My Hiatus & A Nice Gift From MadamLuck

SO sorry it's been so long since I've posted anything. My cat Nemo passed away in mid-November from fibrosis of the lungs and a week later I was visiting family in Ottawa. In December, I've been working pretty much every day so when I have a day off I use it for errands and relaxation.

Emma Watson Elle UK November 2011 Nail Design

I recently came across MissTouver's YouTube channel and saw her nail tutorial on Emma Watson's nail design from the November 2011 edition of Elle UK. I thought it was totally my style so I had to create a video response for it. I decided to use similar colours to what Emma was wearing. I used Orly's Wild Wisteria and OPI's Coney Island Cotton Candy.

Nebula Nails

I finally got around to trying out the VERY trendy nebula/galaxy nail art (or is it over?). I have to admit, it was easier and quicker than I thought it was going to be and I quite like the finished look, especially with purple and holo-glitter. The colours used were Sinful Colors - Black on Black, Revlon Top Speed - Lily/610, Covergirl Boundless Color - Blue You/573, Rimmel 60 Seconds - Climax/660 and Covergirl Boundless Color - Amethyst Mist/410.

Halloween OOTD

I decided on wearing my gothic doll/lolita costume again this Halloween. It was a toss up between a zombie or doll, because I had both costumes readily available. It came down to how much time I had to apply makeup. The doll makeup was the quickest so it won. I went for a Dr.'s appointment and out for dinner afterwards in this look. I was a little disappointed in how few people were dressed up downtown, oh well, I had fun! :)

Comparison of MAC Foundations

Over the past few years I have tried several MAC foundations and I wanted to give a little overview of my experience with the foundations and how they compare with each other. I have been a LONG-time customer of MAC. I purchased my first MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation in 1994 on a trip to Toronto. Since then I have used six or seven foundations from MAC, several have been discontinued, however, I will review five of their current foundations.

There are slight variations in colour throughout the foundations so it is always best to be matched. I personally liked to be matched to my chest because my neck and face are more pink and it looks as if I am wearing a mask if I am matched to my jawline. All the foundations in the photos are the closest match to my current skin tone.

Oct 19, 2011 Circle Lenses + Coupon Code

To my surprise, recently contacted me to review two pairs of their circle lenses. This was great because I have have on the lookout for a pair of circle lenses with a prescription for a few weeks prior. ready stocks over 350 circle, natural, enlarging and cosplay lenses. They also carry false lashes, eye makeup, BB cream, facial masks, etc. is "your eye make up one-stop online beauty store".

I browsed the site and selected their GEO Ultra CK-105 in Black and Geo Xtra WBS-205 Bella Grey 15mm. I also looked for lenses that had a low water content because I have dry eyes (I've read that a low water content is best for dry eyes). They included two super cute lens cases, a pig case and a hippo case, and a unique velcro-like hair "clip" that prevents bends in the hair created by regular hair clips.

Too Faced Exotic Color Intense Eye Shadow Single - Midnight Mist

I was at Sephora the other day and I was looking at the Too Faced display, partially to find a new blush. I came across their Exotic Color Intense Eye Shadow Singles, which were nothing short of amazing. I swatched half of them and they were creamy, opaque and unique. Several of the shadows were duochrome. I fell in love with Midnight Mist, which is a shimmery dark blue with a purple iridescence.

Needless to say, I couldn't wait to take it home and to try it out the next day. Boy, was I disappointed. They must have changed the formula since the testers were put on display. It was much more sheer then at the store and when I tried to blend, it became patchy. It's still a beautiful colour, but the formula leaves much to be desired.

The swatches are no primer on the left, primer on the right and two finger swipes each.

Annabelle Smudgepaints & Smoothie Eyeshadow Pencils

I excitedly received these Smudgepaints and Smoothie Eyeshadow Pencils from Annabelle Cosmetics two weeks ago and I have been using them regularly since. I have been an avid fan of Canadian based Annabelle Cosmetics for years because of their colour selection, availability and affordability. They are one of the few drug store lines, in Canada, that offer bold, edgy cosmetics. They also happen to be a cruetly-free brand (and their parent company Groupe Marcelle).

Smudgepaints - I received five of their gel liner/shadows. They are an extremely creamy gel that, after it dries, does not budge. After I swatched the paints, I rubbed the swatches with my finger to see if they would peel/flake off and they didn't budge. When I have worn Tar as a eyeshadow base (with UDPP) it did not crease through out the day. It comes with an interesting little brush built into the lid. I tried using it to line, but it didn't give an nice clean line so I think it would be better used to smudge the gel.  Suggested retail price: $10.95/2g.

Revlon Royal Cloak and Starry Pink

I was on the search for Revlon's Facets of Fuchsia nail polish (the Deborah Lippmann Bad Romance dupe) from their Expressionists Collection, found it and decided against getting it because I already paid twice the Revlon price for Bad Romance. However,  Revlon's Starry Pink (from the same collection) and Royal Cloak (Masquerade Collection) did catch my eye! I love both formulas as they apply smoothly and dry relatively quick.

Wet n Wild Dream Weaver Collection

I recently received these four Wet n Wild palettes from new blogger KristiWithaK (please show her some love). They are from the Limited Edition Dream Weavers Collection, which was not available in Canada. I don't think any LE Wet n Wild collections are ever available in Canada :'(.

While I am a big fan of Wet n Wild, I only have two of their palettes and I am really not sure why. The elusive Dream Weavers Collection really caught my eye and I sent poor Jacqueline (a.k.a. abrilliantbrunette) on a wild goose chase trying to find the palettes, but to no avail. Then Kristi noticed our conversation on Twitter and offered her unopened palettes. I am so grateful that she was willing to give them to me, she's too kind. <3

Anyway, here are my four Dream Weaver Palettes:

Evil Clown Halloween Tutorial

So I am happy to say that I created my first Halloween tutorial! I came across a few scary clown tutorials this year alread, which made me hesitant to create this look. However, I had already purchased my supplies so I decided to go through with it anyway. I wanted to use supplies that are easily found at Halloween/theatrical supply stores or easily substituted.

I was inspired by Pennywise (from It), Heckles & Twitch and this photo.

I LOVE Flakies!

So I decided to rummage around in my old polishes for something to layer on top of black and I came across an old gem. L'Oreal Jet-Set Shine in 615 Paint the Town. I layered 2 coats on Sinful Colors Black on Black and got a beautiful red/gold/green holographic flaky. I also finally put my Essie Matte About You top coat to use for the second photo.

1920s Inspired FOTD for Nymphette415's FOTD Challenge Calendar

I am making it a goal for the next few weeks to do at least 2 FOTDs from Nymphette415's September FOTD Challenge Calendar.  I recently created a tutorial based on her Grunge day, which I created a 1920s Unconventional Grunge Look (seeing a trend?).

The look I came up with was a penciled eyebrow, ton of blush on the apples and temples, heavy black messy eyeshadow, dramatic eyelashes on the upper and lower lids and a very dark pouty lip. I didn't have a 1920s wig so I had to settle for a 1940s wardrobe.

Products used:

Urban Decay Primer Potion - Eden
MAC Paintpot - Blackground
NYX e/s - Black
Annabelle Kohl Liner - Black
Shu Uemura Ultimate Expression Mascara - Black
Wet n Wild Halloween Lashes - Spider Lady

Ben Nye Cake Liner - Black
MAC e/s - Brulle (to block out brows)

Yaby Blush - BL035

MAC Lip liner - Nightmoth

Playing Around with My Wigs

I have had 3 wigs kicking around for a year or so and I decided to break them out and play around with styling them. Two of them are made out of kanekalon fibre, which makes them look a little more real, washed and they can be heat styled under 200 F. The purple wig is probably just some sort of polyester.

I purchased this cosplay wig off of eBay last year for drag day (my husband was my model <3). It is excellent quality and the cap isn't too large. I think it was around $30 with free shipping.

I also purchased this wig off if eBay and it is probably from the same manufacturer, but different seller. This was also probably around $30 with free shipping.

This last wig was from one of my local costume stores, a cheap 1920s style wig that I try to make look a little more shapely by teasing and hair spraying. :)

Holographic Steam Punk Nail

This is my Steam Punk nail tutorial done with OPIs DS Sapphire. I liked how it almost turned a mauve colour on top of Sally Hansen's Xtreme Wear polish in Black Out.

New Wig!

SO I finally purchased a wig. Occasionally I miss having long hair and how feminine it makes me look. In school, I had the opportunity to try a lot of different wigs and it opened my eyes that wigs don't have to look totally fake.

I went to a hair store in Vancouver named Abantu and tried on quite a few wigs. This wig was my favourite of the 20 I tried on. It is the Fashion Source NF-9 Five. It is made of Futura Fiber, which is heat resistant up to 390F. What I really liked about this wig is that it doesn't have a TON of hair, which can be a dead giveaway that someone is wearing a wig, and the fibers weren't too shiny and the hairs are smooth and tangle-free. I also really liked the price; $45 with my 10% student discount!

I trimmed the bangs for my forehead length and I straightened it before taking this photo. I look forward to wearing this wig in an upcoming video. :)

Moo Business Cards

I decided to order business cards before I attended IMATS Vancouver.  I remembered coming across an offer from YouTube and Moo for free business cards a while back. I looked up if the offer was still valid, and indeed, it was.

The offer was for 50 free business cards, however, you would have a YouTube and Moo banner on the edges of the cards. After browsing the site, I decided that I wanted to order business cards without the banner.

Some of the features that Moo had to offer that set them apart from the other sites I browsed were:

  • EVERY business card can have a different image;
  • Cards come standard with double sided full colour print;
  • You can choose between matte laminate or 100% recycled heavy card stock; and
  • They have a wide selection of stylish designs to choose from, or you can upload your own.

I decided on two sets of 100 MiniCards for $19.99 each. One set for beauty blogging and the other for makeup artistry. I really liked their designs so I chose 16 images, seven for beauty blogging and nine for makeup artistry. I also ordered two MiniCard holders. The shipping is normally $6.75 for 15-20 day turnaround, but since IMATS Vancouver was in less than two weeks, I decided to place a rush print and express shipping (seven days). Rush printing was $10 and express shipping was $40.75.

My order arrived in exactly seven days after I placed my order. The packaging was extremely stylish and high quality. The boxes are sturdy with dividers so you can store your business cards and other people's business cards in the same box. The key chain MiniCard holders hold 12 cards each and are made of shiny durable plastic. The cards are high quality and professional looking. I am extremely happy with my cards and I will for sure order from Moo again.

BTW, if you follow this link it can get you a 10% discount on business cards from Moo. :)

Nicole By OPI Nicole's Nickel Nails

This is the nail polish I wearing right now, as I type. ;)

This has got to be my favourite glitter nail polish. Nicole's Nickel is pretty opaque, full coverage in only two coats. I love the new brush style (it's extra wide) because it covers the nail in two strokes.

Silver Shatter Nails

I recently came across OPI's Silver Shatter crackle nail polish, and of course I had to buy it! I waited a few days to try it because I was working with some heavy adhesives that would ruin my nails in a day.  It was worth the wait, this is my new favourite polish! I really want to try out Sally Hansen's Crackle Overcoat, but I don't think it's available in Canada yet.

My Recent Nails

Recently I decided that I am not going to use my blog to just post my makeup tutorials, but I am going to use it to post reviews, FOTDs and nail polish fun. So saved some photos this week of my nails. I usually paint my nails 2 or 3 times a week.

Sorry for the dry hands, but I've been working with plaster all week and it sucks the moisture out of your skin like nothing else!

This combo is one coat of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Purple Gala on top of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Black Out. Purple Gala is gold reflects in a purple base.

The next combo is one coat of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Purple Gala on top of  one coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Grape Going.

Finally I tried out the newspaper print technique from videos on YouTube. Jazziebabycakes tweeted a photo of her nails and I had to do it!! It took a little but to get the hang of it, but I think I finally got it on the last nail or two! I used Catrice Cosmetics Am I Blue or Green as the base colour (which is an amazingly opaque polish BTW).

Anyway, I hope to be posted quite regularly as I am constantly experimenting with makeup and nail designs/colours. :)

Styling VERY Short Hair

I was finally able to get a real haircut and I am so happy with my new cut!! I decided to do a little video on my method of styling very short hair because I know a lot of girls (and guys) with hair of this length don't know what to do with their hair. It's very easy to just let it sit there and for there to be little shape to hair of this length until it is a few inches longer.

I am posting a few photos of the new cut for those out there who would like some inspiration or reference photos.

A Tartan Smokey Eye

Lately I've been wearing dark smokey eyes, so I decided to do a tutorial on it. I also just picked the MAC A Tartan Tale: 6 Beauties Play it Cool palette at a CCS in Washington recently and I wanted to use it. I am not a huge MAC Christmas collection fan, but I am not sure how I missed this palette, it has beautiful colours, not to mention a lot of purple hued colours. Latisse and Wet n Wild Tutorial

I finally got around to another makeup tutorial for everyone. I feel badly because I haven't been doing too many tutorials lately. I have been uninspired because I haven't been wearing makeup very often because of school. I mostly wear black smokey looks lately. This look was inspired by the Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trio in Spoiled Brat. I am impressed by the colour pay off of this Wet n Wild palette, as usual, and the colours, which are so me! :D

The second item I want to talk about is Latisse. Latisse was developed from the glaucoma eye drop Lumigan. Users of Lumigan noticed that their eyelashes grew in longer and thicker while they used the eye drops. Latisse is essentially the same drop, however, it is brushed along the lash line instead of dropped in the eye. Latisse increases lash growth time allowing them to grow longer and thicker, but it will not grow more lashes. I have had noticeable success with Latisse after 7 months and I will continue to pose photos of the progress. :)

Pearlized Turquoise

I decided to swatch a few of the purple colours I have to compare them to my benchmark purple, Make Up For Ever #92. As you can see, there is still no dupe out there. All About Inglot

Inglot has become quite the YouTube sensation so I decided to post some swatches of the Inglot products that I have collected over the years. Unfortunately, some of my items have been either discontinued or renumbered. It is a brand that I have loved over the years and I was quite heartbroken when they closed most of their stores around Canada. I figure it was because they grew way too fast and couldn't compete with a well known brand called MAC. However, it seems as though they have smartly been cautious the past few years and are making an impact in the makeup community in the US, which I am quite happy about because they really have some great products. There are several finishes: Matte, Pearl, AMC (Advanced Makeup Components) and D.S. (Double Sparkle). AMC and D.S. look exactly the same to me, but apparently AMC is supposed to last longer...but with a primer I don't really think it matters.

From Left to right, top to bottom: Matte 379, Pearl 439, D.S. 494, AMC Shine 39, AMC 859S6, D.S. 482, Pearl 434, Pearl 413, D.S. 477, AMC 58.

Here is another post about my tattoos. I made a post a while back, but now I have a few more to add to the list. :)

My first tattoo was a stylized Haida eagle on my lower back. I got this because of my First Nation's heritage and to celebrate getting my driver's license and my first job as an accountant in 2006. It was done my Anastasia Powell in Edmonton, AB.

My second tattoo was the one on my left shoulder. I got this tattoo after my cat, Mr. Salt, died of diabetes on New Years Day in 2007. This tattoo was by Anastasia Powell in Edmonton, AB.

My third tattoo was on my chest. I had a dream shortly after moving to Vancouver that I had a tattoo on my chest of heart shaped cherries with stars shooting out from them. So the next day I was impulsive and I booked a consultation with an artist.

The fourth tattoo I got was my 3/4 sleeve. I went through a very tough time in my life and I wanted a tattoo to celebrate that I was overcoming the rough period. I wanted a Japanese tattoo with flowers and wind bars. This tattoo was done by Shoko Sonoda in Vancouver, BC in 2010.

My last tattoos were a Christmas gift from my husband. I've always hated my armpits, I mean, no ones is pretty, but I thought mine were particularly ugly. I may get more stars added on to the tattoo in the future. These tattoos were done by Amanda Murray in Richmond, BC.
